Chaturmas holds an immense religious and spiritual significance among Hindus. These are the most sacred months and Chaturmas began from July 25, 2026 from Dev Shayani Ekadashi because Lord of the universe (Lord Vishnu) went to Ksheer Sagar for cosmic sleep for four months. According to Hindu Panchang, Lord Vishnu will come out of the cosmic ocean on Dev Uthani Ekadashi, which is going to be celebrated on November 20, 2026.

What is Chaturmas?

Chaturmas is a span of four months. These four months—Sawan, Bhadrapada, Ashwin, and Kartik—have significant religious importance. Many significant festivals falls during these four months such as Sawan month dedicated to Lord Shiva, Kavad Yatra, Raksha Bandhan, Hariyali Teej, Krishna Janmashtami, Ganesh Chaturthi, and many other festivals are obbserved during these months.

According to Hindu Panchang, Chaturmas is the perfect time period to perform various religious and spiritual activities when Lord Vishnu sleeps in the cosmic ocean or ksheer sagar. This is a sacred time of fasting, penance, maintaining a spiritual discipline and numerous puja rites that will bring spiritual awareness in your life. During these four months of periods, there are certain things you should perform and should avoid since doing certain things are believed to be unlucky. Now let’s discuss what to do and what not to do during this Chaturmas season:

Do’s and Don’ts to follow during these months:

1. Avoid Mundan: It is considered unlucky to perform mundan during this month.2. Marriage: Marriage ceremonies should be avoided during this time period. 3. Engagement: No auspicious activity, including engagement and roka, should be planned.4. Purchasing a new house: Purchasing a new house at this time is not recommended.5. Griha Pravesh: Moving into a new home should be avoided.

Why auspicious activities should be avoided?

Since Lord Vishnu stays in Ksheer Sagar for four months and it is forbidden to engage in any auspicious actions in his absence. However, it is recommended that individuals should engage in various religious and spiritual practices as they can. Devotees are advised to take part in austerities, fasting, meditation, take a holy dip in sacred rivers, visiting temples, and performing various puja rituals. During these four months, devotees should read sacred texts such as Ramayana, Bhagavad Gita, Bhagavad Purana and Shiva Puran.
