LaRoyce Hawkins is departing from the long-running police procedural ‘Chicago P.D.’ after more than a decade with the series. The actor, who has been a series regular since the show’s premiere in 2014, will leave during the upcoming 14th season.According to Deadline, Hawkins will return to the show in the first two or three episodes of Season 14 to wrap up his character Kevin Atwater’s storyline before his departure. The exact manner in which his character will exit the series remains under wraps, though sources indicate it will occur early in the season. Hawkins has also portrayed Atwater in various crossover events with the other police procedurals in the same franchise on the network.

Kevin Atwater’s recent character developments

As part of the Intelligence Unit under Hank Voight, Atwater served alongside elite officers that most recently included Adam Ruzek, Kim Burgess, Dante Torres, and other team members. The character was described as handsome, honest, and loyal, with fans frequently discussing his personal life and hoping he would find romantic fulfillment. While Atwater previously came close to serious relationships, nothing developed until Season 13 Episode 5, when he reconnected with Officer Tasha Fox, a platonic friend from his past who became a romantic interest. However, the potential love connection faced immediate challenges when Tasha revealed that night she was moving to Miami for a new job within a week. Before Atwater woke the next morning, she had departed, leaving behind an orange as a nod to her new home in the Sunshine State, with an open invitation for Atwater to join her.

Throughout the remainder of the season, Atwater struggled with reaching out to Tasha. He would start to compose text messages expressing that he missed her but never sent them. He grappled with what to say and whether he should make contact at all, though an undeniable pull remained between them. Later in Episode 11, Fox returned to Chicago and appeared at Atwater’s door, revealing that she is pregnant with their first child. If Atwater ultimately decides to leave Chicago for Miami, it would align with his character’s recent developments.

LaRoyce Hawkins’ broader television work

Beyond his role on the police procedural, Hawkins has appeared in various other series including a Marvel series for a streaming platform, “Power Book IV: Force” and “Ballers,” among other productions throughout his career.
