'Sardar 2,' 'Mandaadi,' 'Demonte colony 3' and other films face trouble as Tamil Producers Council halts releases from September 1 amid 8 week OTT window dispute - Report

A fresh dispute in the Tamil film industry could affect the release calendar in the coming weeks. The Tamil Film Producers Council and the Tamil Film Active Producers Association have jointly announced that no new Tamil films will be released from September 1. The decision comes amid a growing disagreement between producers, distributors and theatre owners over the rules linked to theatrical and OTT releases. This latest move could directly impact several films currently lined up for release.

Producers protest eight-week OTT release window from September 1

As reported by Cinema Express, the producers’ bodies announced that all ongoing shooting and post-production activities will also be stopped from September 1 as part of their protest. The decision is linked to the demand from theatre owners and distributors that producers assure their films will arrive on streaming platforms within an eight-week window after their theatrical release. The producers have opposed this condition, arguing that such a practice is not followed in neighbouring film industries such as Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam cinema. They described the unilateral decision by exhibitors and distributors as unacceptable and called for discussions involving all stakeholders.

Tamil Producers seek government intervention to resolve industry dispute

According to the joint statement, the producers’ associations plan to bring the issue to the attention of the Tamil Nadu government and seek a solution through talks. Their aim is to find an amicable way to settle the disagreement between the different sections of the industry. Theatre owners, meanwhile, have indicated that they are hopeful of resolving the matter soon. S Sridhar, Secretary of the Tamil Nadu Theatre Owners Association, has also expressed optimism that discussions could help end the deadlock without affecting the wider film industry.

September Tamil movie releases could face uncertainty

The proposed stoppage comes at a crucial time, with several Tamil films scheduled to arrive in theatres during September. Karthi and PS Mithran’s ‘Sardar 2’, Karthik Subbaraj’s ‘Dorothy’ starring Keerthy Suresh, Soori‘s ‘Mandaadi’, and Hiphop Tamizha Aadhi’s ‘Meesaya Murukku 2’ are among the films expected during the month. ‘Lenin Pandiyan’, ‘Demonte Colony 3’ and GV Prakash Kumar and Kayadu Lohar’s ‘Immortal’ are also part of the upcoming release lineup. If the dispute continues, producers and audiences could face uncertainty over the release plans. The coming days are therefore expected to be important for finding a solution before the September release schedule is affected.
