‘Black Panther 3’ has officially been confirmed! The upcoming superhero film from the MCU, which originally starred the late Chadwick Boseman in the lead as King T’Challa, is now slated for a brand new direction with its third instalment. During the San Diego Comic-Con event, the production studios announced several new and upcoming projects planned for the Cinematic Universe.
David Jonsson joins ‘Black Panther 3’
While the projects had already been at the top priority in discussions, no new updates had been announced. Deadline reported that during the Comic-Con’s H Panel, Ryan Coogler, who directed the previous two films, confirmed that he would be returning for the upcoming film. Not only that, but ‘The Long Walk’ actor David Jonsson was also announced as the new Black Panther. T’Challa’s son was first revealed at the end of ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.’Rather than being recast, Marvel confirmed that Jonsson would be taking over the mantle of the Black Panther; however, he would be playing the role of T’Challa’s son in the upcoming film. The official release date has also been set for December 15, 2028. It was also revealed that the upcoming third instalment would be shot entirely on larger format celluloid film. Leticia Wright and Winston Duke are also going to be reprising their role for the 2028 film as Shuri and M’Baku, respectively.Back in 2023, while talking to Variety, Wright had opened up about working on ‘Black Panther 3’ and how she felt that the new film was already in the works. She had commented at the time that, “You know, we just had a terrific two years of bringing it out and everybody coming together to support it. We need a little bit of a break, we need to regroup, and Ryan needs to get back into the lab, so it’s going to take a little while, but we’re really excited for you guys to see that.”
About the ‘Black Panther’ franchise
The ‘Black Panther’ franchise started in 2018, with Chadwick Boseman taking on the leading role of the King of Wakanda. The film, along with Boseman and Wright, starred Lupita Nyong’o, Forrest Whitaker, Michael B. Jordan, Danai Gurira and Angela Bassett. The film was a big hit, and even earned 3 Oscars for best costume design, best production design and best original score.
